How to Remove the Rear View Mirror on a Jaguar XK8 XKR (X100)

Jaguar XK8 XKR Rear View Mirror

The Jaguar XK8 XKR rear view mirror is of the electrochromatic type and is operated by a control button at the base of the mirror. When switched on, the mirror darkens automatically to prevent glare from the following vehicle’s headlamps and clears when light levels return to normal or when reverse gear is selected.

Where electrochromatic door mirrors are fitted, they are operated in conjunction with the interior mirror by the same control, and function in the same manner.

These mirrors can lose their electrochromatic coating. This is indicated by a distinctive split in coloration – top clear and bottom coated darker. Sometimes the fluid in the mirror leaves a large oval shape on the mirror. The fluid is toxic and if it does leak will eat into the plastic on the J Gate. If this happens then you need to either replace with a new mirror or find a good used one. The key here is to indentify which type of connector plug you have – white or a yellow. This will require removal of the roof console. Also the last 6 digits of your car’s Vin will help us identify if your car also has electrochromatic door mirrors. There are several part numbers for the XK8 / R rear view mirror.

There is not a lot of information on the web on how to do this job.

See below for the basis steps on how to remove the roof console and then the rear view mirror:
