XK8 and XKR Convertible Hood Mechanism: Common Problems and Correct Oil to use

In earlier examples of the Jaguar XK8 / XKR, slow or erratic operation of the hood is typically caused by the type of oil used in the hydraulic system. This has a tendency to coagulate and take on the form of marmalade type strands which obviously then will affect the operation of the hood mechanism. Since then, Jaguar changed the oil used in the XK8 / XKR hood mechanism.

To therefore resolve problems with the XK8 / XKR hood operation parts and system in the earlier cars there is a need to drain the system, to then fully strip down the hydraulics, flush through the oil and then replace with the new oil. Ideally the system needs to be flushed 2-3 times to ensure the old oil is fully removed and to ensure the future smooth operation of the hood mechanism system.

The procedure to change the oil should be available in one of the Jaguar forums.

One of the XK8 / XKR tools that may be required is the Allen key supplied with all convertible models and sited in the boot next to the pump. This enables the hood to be hand wound down in the event of complete electrical failure.

The correct fluid to use is Pensoil CHF 11S.

Jaguar XK8 XKR (X100) Spark Plug Specifications and Spark Plug Gaps

Recently on my 2001 XK8 I decided to change the spark plugs as it looked like they had not been changed for over 7 years. There are 4 different part numbers covering this Jaguar model so I wanted to ensure I purchased the correct part. The current part number supercessions are NCA3850DA2, NCA3850FA1, NCA3850HA2, C2A1535.  I also wanted to check and if required set the correct gap for the spark plugs.

Jaguar XK8 XKR (X100) Lower Rear Wing Repair Panel

After several months of discussing, researching and producing the required tooling for this part I am pleased to announce the availability of this Jaguar XK8 XKR (X100) lower rear wing repair panel. As many owners will know this is a notoriously bad area on the car for corrosion. Condensation can build on the inside of the panel and will run down to sit and stay in the bottom lip of the panel. Also the exterior of the panel behind the rear wheels is exposed to dirt and dampness thrown up by the rear wheels. The bottom section of the panel is attacked from both sides with corrosion running from behind the rear wheel to the the area underneath the rear lights. With these steel bodied cars getting older it is likely that many cars will already of had problems or the problems are just waiting to surface (literally !)

In the past the repair options have been to either make repairs to this area of the car or replace the whole quarter panel parts at high cost.

For those panels that are available add to their high cost the many labour hours of specialised time to firstly remove the old quarter panel and then fit the new quarter panel to the inner structure

As no repair panels have been available to date owners and body work specialists have had to fabricate repairs welding in many sections of metal to try and replicate the general curvature of the panel which curves at the bottom of the wing and then round to underneath the light area. We have seen repairs to wings looking like a patchwork quilt of metal sections. Large amounts of body filler are then used to try and reproduce the general shape.

For this reason we have produced this semi hand crafted repair panel based on tooling that in turn has been based on the genuine Jaguar panels.

* the panel has been designed to repair just the area most susceptible to corrosion

* considerably reduced parts cost

* considerably reduced labour costs

* welding reduced to a minimum results in improved longevity of the repair

* reduced amount of body filling to ensure a perfect finish
