Jaguar ZF5HP and ZF6HP Automatic Transmissions Now Available for XK8′s
Several years ago a major XK8 and XKR Parts challenge was to source a replacement transmission to resolve problems of premature failure for the Jaguar ZF5HP Transmission. The transmissions are very smooth in operation and don't usually give any problems up to 60,000 miles. However, beyond this point they can cause problems, ultimately resulting in expensive replacement.
The main problem area is the forward clutch pack with a retaining clip that wears through the pressed steel housing and eventually falls away. The initial symptom being slippage of the gears and then eventually drive does not engage. However, not all may be lost as the same symptoms could be brought about by a blocked oil filter preventing oil passing through the gearbox.
Also the gearboxes are supposedly 'non serviceable' items and sealed for life. However, it is recommended to change the special oil (Esso LT7 1141 only !) at 50,000 mile intervals as well as the filters and sump gasket being the XK8 Parts required.
Typical replacement via a Jaguar main dealer would be (and still is) in the region of £3000 to £4000 plus labour required.
XK8 Parts can now supply remanufactured ZF5HP gearboxes that not only include 5-speed automatic transmissions but also the very latest ZF6HP 6-speed gearboxes.
We are able to offer service exchange programmes and remanufactured automatic transmissions which are all assembled by factory-trained technicians – this means a fully comprehensive service. Not only do customers get the benefit of a fully remanufactured unit (not just the replacement of the failed part), with warranty, but all ZF genuine parts have been used
We can also supply an exchange unit. In this case you get a ZF5HP OR ZF6HP completely remanufactured unit, on an exchange basis, supplied to yourself or to your garage of choice. The remanufactured transmission is supplied with a fully guaranteed torque converter and is tested on a ZF manufactured test rig. If required for an additional cost, we can supply the correct specification LT71141 oil. You will also receive instructions on how to carry out a correct oil level check.
This is a great solution for Jaguar XK8 Parts supply as ZF5hp (5 speed) and ZF6hp (6 speed) fully remanufactured automatic transmissions are engineered to their originally-supplied quality specification.

Really helpful information. Transmission problems are costly, I experienced that recently.

Hi http://www.xk8-parts.com I have a high mileage (90,000 miles) XK8 and I don’t know if the transmission fluid has been replaced. Can you advise if I should get this done or just leave it due to the age of the autobox ?.
Thanks,
Steve

You could take your transmission to a Jaguar specialist and ask them to carry out an oil change.
